about

An atmospheric lo-fi journey through minimalist soundscapes, drones, guitar work, loops and found sounds.

My friend and long term musical collaborator Jeremy Stokes was kind enough to write some words about "the left side"...

It is hard for me not to relate music to travel, as like a lot of people I do most of my listening whilst commuting to and from work on a train. The music I listen to each day accompanies a widescreen view of the Essex countryside and suburbs through a scratched and dirty window, an hour and a half long tracking shot that seems exactly the same every day, but is subtly different.
Kieran Mahon makes instrumental music that feels just right for this environment and mode of transport, his music seems to illustrate moments in time both clear and hazy, like when you see something unexpected from the corner of your eye and the car or train you’re traveling in has moved along too fast for you to see it again, but that fleeting image remains with you. Rather than mimicking a film soundtrack this album would better suit a slideshow of photographs, a lifetime of snapshots and memories. Rain sodden caravan holidays give way to sunburned faces and hedges filled with sparrows, empty playgrounds and long waits at bus stops with only a Walkman for company.
The music is performed in a variety of ways which rather than creating an atmosphere of tension has a purity and cohesion. The album finishes with five tracks that jump from intricate acoustic fingerstyle guitar to minimal electric, reverb-laden piano, percussive sampled harps, found drumming and conversation and what would sound gimmicky in someone else’s hands, here works individually
and as a whole. It is like a favourite compilation tape that captures
a mood exactly except that every tune is by the same artist.
