about

This album was made as an audio response/companion to the 1964 JG Ballard novel The Burning World (known to me when I read it in my early 20s as The Drought).
Aspects of the book have embedded themselves deeply into my subconsciousness over the years, not least because of the ongoing spectre of climate change which hangs over us all.
I had started a musical project late in 2019 and when I saw the awful pictures of the bush fires from Australia during December 2019/January 2020 memories of Ballard's book came back to me.
I reread the book. Whilst it is clearly not Ballard's best work by a long shot, it still had the same impact on me and therefore my musical project suddenly had a strong theme.
I have tried to capture the mood and atmosphere that the book makes me feel.
Despite being set across several open environments, the book is cloaked in a kind of claustrophobia - there's a constant presence of smoke, ash and dust. There are surreal elements, horror and bleakness, as well as powerful moments of sadness that almost become something like a kind of serenity.
I used very limited equipment, everything was recorded live and I even had the happy accident of using a broken audio interface for the first demo recording which swamped the sound in hiss - something which I then adopted for the actual recordings proper.
Whilst this may not always be a relaxng listen, I am really happy with how things turned out and feel that I got very close to what I was aiming for.
