About “Scanning…”

I have always been interested in radio. Scanning shortwave frequencies is a peculiarly obsessive passtime.

When I was young I would spend a lot of time seeking interesting sounds on my World band radio. It had a definite influence on my thinking when it came to making sound later on.

Radio static and guitar feedback have a lot in common sonically.
I could easily hear the Velvet Underground within a wall of detuned radio noise - and vice versa.

I never approached scanning the frequency bands as anything other than a random game. Sometimes I'd find nothing of interest, sometimes a momentary gem would find its way into the receiver.

When I was young the only way to access broadcasts was with a receiver - now of course the internet is full of recordings that have been posted.

This collection of pieces is made up of sounds that I have sourced myself and samples and full recordings of radio transmissions that I have downloaded.

Thank you to those who have shared sounds online.
Just for the record: I never knew the Conet Project existed until I was over halfway through this project!
